About Operating Deflection Shape (ODS) Analysis

Operating Deflection Shape (ODS) analysis combines vibration measurements taken at many points to show how a machine, foundation or piping system moves while it is running. The result is an animated picture of the motion, which makes it much easier to see where a problem starts.

ODS is often used when ordinary vibration readings show a high level but the cause is not obvious, for example a flexible base, a resonating frame or a weak support.

What it helps find or fix

  • Flexible or cracked foundations and frames
  • Resonance of structures and piping
  • Looseness that moves a whole assembly
  • Where to stiffen, support or modify a structure

Benefits

  • Shows the motion instead of only numbers
  • Guides the right fix the first time
  • Works on equipment in normal operation
  • Helps explain recurring vibration problems
